The Lowdown
This course is a new BA in Education. Students study the development of humans within all its myriad of contexts. The course enables students to gain specialist knowledge in areas such as psychology or drama and literature.
The Education building is designed with teaching in mind and includes a psychology laboratory and a library to encourage high-end research.
Your first year features four mandatory papers: Education, Systems and Disciplines; Learning and Human Development; Education, Creativity and Culture & Education and Social Justice.
In your second year, you have four papers. Two are mandatory including Designing Educational Research. This will give you a grounding in the research, theories, and circumstances that have shaped education. You then study for two other papers that are student-selected and could be in areas as diverse as psychology, or international development.
In the final year, you take four papers: a mandatory dissertation; and three modules on specific issues of your choosing. No one A-Level (or equivalent) is especially required,
The course is predominantly female: of offers given out, only 25% were for male students, and only 20% of applications were from male students. It is a relatively small faculty with an average of 40 places. The course sets students up for research and teaching. Although this course prepares you well for the education sector, students have also entered a variety of fields, including research, publishing, administration, and charity work.
