The Lowdown
The English and Modern Languages course combines English Literature with an additional European language, such as: Czech, Spanish German, Modern Greek, French, Italian, Portuguese and Russian. Some of these can be studied as a ‘Beginners’ language which can prove an exciting and enjoyable experience.
On the English side, in first year, students will gain a broad overview of English Literature. In the final years, more choice is available, and students choose three papers from a selection provided by the Faculty.
On the Modern Languages side, first year is split evenly between literature of the chosen language, and the language itself. The emphasis on literature provides a convenient bridge between English and your chosen language. In the final year, students may choose to write their dissertation on a comparative topic.
One of the highlights of this course is the year abroad, which takes place in third year. Students choose what they do during this time, and previous undergraduates have worked as paid language assistants or interns, or studied at a foreign university. These experiences prove vital in providing a solid language foundation.
An A-level (or equivalent) in English Literature or English Literature and Language is required. Candidates are also expected to have an A-level (or equivalent) in their Modern Language of choice, unless they are applying to a Beginners' course in Czech, Italian, Modern Greek, or Portuguese.
