The Lowdown
One of the largest undergraduate degrees with an annual intake of almost 250 (of which, over the last three years, 57% have been female), Oxford has a world-leading History department and hosts a range of visiting speakers. It is the largest History Faculty in Europe. History covers a huge range of topics and eras, whilst offering students the choice to pick topics that appeal to them. The first year looks at English, European and World history just to get students acquainted with the breadth of the subject. Historical methods are also taught along with an optional subject from a choice of 20.
With more than 30 different options, history students in their second and third years have the opportunity to study the more obscure parts of history. There are options from all over the world which cover different aspects of history such as China since 1900 and The Middle East in the age of the Empire 1830-1871, as well as source-based options. Students also take one paper on the history of the British Isles and another on European and world history. A portfolio of essays is submitted in the final year.
An A Level in History is recommended but not essential.
