Oxford – Classical Archaeology and Ancient History

This course brings together two subjects to provide a full appreciation of the classical world and civilisations. By learning about the architecture, texts, art and society of the period, students develop the ability to think analytically and acquire a broad knowledge of everyday life from thousands of years ago. It is one of the smallest courses at Oxford with an intake of around 20 undergraduates a year.

Teaching is split into classes, lectures and tutorials. Some examine history or archaeology independent of each other; some merge both disciplines together. Undergrads might choose to study an ancient language, though this is not required. Students must, however, be able to undertake two pieces of practical work: archaeological fieldwork, and a report on an ancient site or artefact. They may have the option to do so overseas, though Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum is home to many relics from ancient cultures.
