History and Politics (or HisPol) combines the study of two interlinked disciplines. A student in this course will be able to analyse political problems from a historical perspective. Oxford has many world-renowned political theorists and historians, which makes studying this course exciting and stimulating. HisPol averages an intake of 44 a year, with over 57% of successful applicants being female. This is a very competitive course with just 11% of applicants being successful.
Students pick from an extensive list of options which allows them to study both medieval periods and modern periods. In first year, undergraduates must take an introductory paper, either in the theory of politics or theories of the state. This knowledge carries through to final year studies. Students on the Oxford course are required to study quantitative methods to prepare them for the Social Sciences papers in second year.
Teaching takes place in the form of lectures and tutorials, and usually, students complete one essay per week. In their final year, students write a thesis on either History or Politics.
An A Level (or equivalent) in History is recommended but not a requirement, whilst Sociology, Politics, or Government and Politics (if possible) may prove useful.
